Academic Technologies and Legal Concerns

The use of Technologies in teaching often touches on legal concerns, including:

  • FERPA: ¬†student education records, including class rosters, should be considered when using cloud services such as Google Docs.
  • HDCP: High Definition Copyright Protection, a technical form of protection put in place by the recording industry, can prevent people from being able to share video from high definition sources in some cases.
  • DMCA: copying of DVDs is subject to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act. People who come to the Academic Technology Center to request a copy of all or part of a DVD will be asked to review the DMCA provisions and will be asked to sign off on them.
